Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP)

Managed and disposed of approximately 165,000 metric tonnes of impacted soil to date. Project is ongoing.

The original Trans Mountain Pipeline was built in 1953. The Expansion is essentially a twinning of this existing 1,150-kilometre pipeline between Strathcona County (near Edmonton), Alberta and Burnaby, BC. It will create a pipeline system with the nominal capacity of the system going from approximately 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day.

In August of 2021 Shxwha:y Village (SV) and Headlands Environmental Inc. (HEI) met with Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMEP) representatives to discuss the opportunity to provide disposal and management pricing for TMEP using the Skway Landfill and Bio-remediation Facility (SBF) for disposal and management requirements on the TMEP.

Using the SV facility will allow for safer travel as trucks will be heading south to the facility versus north through the Coquihalla Highway and various connectors in winter conditions. There is potential for longer travel times due to icy snow conditions and road closures in the winter months.

The SV facility has received material from all levels of the provincial and federal governments and is a fully engineered and lined facility with leachate collection and management that is treated through a polishing wetland and discharged to the sanitary sewer system. It is a true closed loop landfill and soil management system. All materials that come to this site are managed on this site, documented on site, and stay on site using our grid management system.
