The Shxwha:y Soil Management Facility is a facility located on the Shxwha:y First Nation near Chilliwack, BC. The Soil Management Facility occupies a footprint of approximately 8 Ha and the completed area of closure is approximately 6 Ha. It is a secure, engineered soil management site that is fully lined with a HDPE bottom liner, an effective leachate collection and treatment system and off site leachate disposal at the Chilliwack Wastewater Treatment Plant. The site also has a soil management gas collection and flaring system and a comprehensive environmental monitoring program. The Soil Management Facility is conformant with the B.C. Landfill Criteria.
A soil remediation biocell has been constructed at the facility. The secure biocell is on a lined footprint. Petroleum contaminated soils (PCS) in excess of Shxwha:y Soil Management Facility disposal standards will be treated in this cell prior to disposal in the soil management facility.
Currently, the Soil Management Facility is directly managed by the Shxwhá:y Indian Band as a Land Code Band (See Shxwhá:y Indian Band Land Code) with authority to fully administer the environmental issues on their traditional territory under Shxwha:y Village Soil Deposit Permit issued to Headlands Environmental Inc.
