Annacis Water Tunnel

The 2.3-kilometre-long Annacis Water Supply Tunnel, located approximately 50 metres below the Fraser River between New Westminster and Surrey, is set to accommodate growth, replace aging infrastructure, and prepare for a major earthquake.

Construction on the tunnel began in 2022 and is expected to be completed in 2028, with a project budget of $450 million.

Once complete, a 2.6-metre-diameter steel water main will be installed inside the tunnel, and valve chambers will be constructed near each shaft to connect the new water main to the regional water transmission system.

Metro Vancouver plans to restore both shaft sites after construction, including replanting trees in Surrey and creating a new green space in New Westminster, with input from the community, the City, and local First Nations.

Traylor-Aecon General Partnership, a consortium of Aecon and Traylor Bros Inc., is delivering the project.

It is a secure, engineered landfill site that is fully lined with a HDPE bottom liner, an effective leachate collection and treatment system and off site leachate disposal at the Chilliwack Wastewater Treatment Plant.
